Why Nordstrom Sales-People Are WEIRD
Thanks for Voting on Copywriting Content for Book Part II --
Dear Friend,
The Reason #1 Nordstrom Sales People are WEIRD is...
Because 90% of them came to work at Nordstroms from a Competitor. And the Word "WEIRD" is a compliment!
"WEIRD" as in They Came to Nordstroms BECUZ their Boss Tried to Scare Them away from Nordstroms. The Reasons given for them NOT to Wanna Work for Nordstroms -- Actually Attracted them!
You Ask, "What Attracted these Top Sales-People?
What Attracted Me so much I Drove to the Nearest Nordstroms and handed out Thank you Cards? Got #1 Sales people in each Department to sign my book?
FREEDOM:
Nordstroms treats each sales person as if they are running their own Company. YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. You run your own show To a great extent.
And as I Worked my way thru the #1 Sales People in Each Department I Discovered Something New. A Strategy not used by other Stores.
Each #1 Sales person SELLS stuff For Other Departments!
Example:
IF you are buying new shoes. The #1 Salesman will say, "I just saw a suit (Or a Dress.) that goes with these shoes."
IF You Purchase Shirts and Slacks, during the sale, The #1 Saleswoman will Excort you over to the Shoe Department. Introduce you to The #1 Shoe Expert.
AND...
This Reciprocity does not stop there.
#1 Sales people from Different Cities Help each other too! Refer clients to each other.
I Have a Confession to make.
I DISLIKE Shopping for Clothing.
So I was Delighted to hear that my sizes. And my favorite Brands, colors, Designers were in the Computer. And could be Sent to #1 Sales people in Other Nordstroms Stores.
In Other Cities.
During a seminar break in Houston, Texas I visited a Nordstrom Store. Ordered a couple shirts and pants. Did not have to get measured by a tailor!
The #1 Sales person simply called up my Records. And phoned MY Sales lady back in Baltimore.
THEN I Had an AHA! Moment.
While reading a book about the Composer, Cole Porter. ("You Do Something to Me" -- "You're The Top" -- "Kiss Me Kate.")
Turns out each time Cole had to Jump on an Airplane. Fly from Europe to the USA. He'd call his friend THE PRINCE.
Cole Might be in Paris. He would say, "I've got to Fly to California. Would you Like to Come? The plane leaves in an hour."
THE PRINCE Says, "Sure. Let's go."
NO LUGGAGE!
The Prince would buy whatever he needed when he landed.
My AHA Idea?
Was that I Could Travel Like THE PRINCE. And Avoid WAITING IN LINE While my Underwear gets X-RAYED.
Simply by tapping into the "Nordstrom Network."
Shirts get Frayed.
Shoes wear out.
Socks get holes in them.
Gotta buy this stuff anyway.
So The Next Trip to Los Angeles I took... I called my Baltimore NORDSTROM #1 Sales Lady. Asked if she would help me. And placed orders for a few of everything I Would need At a Bootcamp -- Seminar in Los Angeles.
When my Plane Landed in California.
I Got in a Cab.
Told the Cabbie -- "Please Drive by The Nordstrom Department store at the XYZ address. And then to the hotel."
MET AT THE CURB!
The #1 SUIT Sales lady in Los Angeles Came out to the Curb. Pushed my stuff Thru the window in a duffle bag.
But The Best THING?
The Best Thing about this -- TRAVEL LIKE A PRINCE IDEA -- is Watching the Faces of Airport Security. And Other People, at the Airport, all waiting in Line.
When I say, "Luggage? What Luggage? I Don't Have Any Luggage."
ONCE I even got Quizzed By Airport Security!
The Security Guard LOVED the idea.
Thanks,
Glenn Osborn
